How A Great Product Can Be Bad News: Apple, iPad, and the Closed Mac

To put it briefly, I think the new, mobile Apple is doing immense harm to the computing legacy the company has forged. We could have had a Mac tablet today. Instead, we have a giant iPhone – and that’s a decision that has some serious repercussions. It’s a blow to open source alternatives, but also to open development in general: the power of interchangeable hardware and software, on which everything we do with music and visuals on computers is based.
...
I’m entirely biased by my own perspective. There are certain things I care about, that I believe in. I can talk about the technical, measurable values of each of those, but I can only speak for myself. With that in mind, the iPad, in a single device, embodies the exact opposite of all the reasons I’ve invested so much time in computing for the last 25 years.

Thats pretty much what I think too.

Microsoft may upstage Apple with new 'tablet' handheld computer - And btw hell has frozen over!

The device could be a major blow to Apple, which is widely expected to unveil its tablet, thought to be called iSlate, on January 27. It will also challenge e-readers, such as Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s eReader.

I could have taken this seriously until I read that there is no chance this is the microsoft courier thing! So now I'm just rofl!

Update: Yup its just the same old Windows in a slate form factor. Sad.

The End of Book Publishing As We Know It

few days ago, I watched a video demo of the “SI Tablet” (see video below), a new eBook device developed by Time, Inc. and The Wonderfactory. It demonstrates how a touch screen, portability, and the convergence of text, audio, and video can create unprecedented opportunities for content providers. Frankly, it is the most compelling media device I have seen yet

I'm never going to be one of those people who buys these. Sorry I just can't. I like computers because they aren't consumer devices. I can produce whatever I want using the computer. These so called "media devices" are just one way consumer devices, meant for mindless drones. Waste of time. I don't own a TV. If I am watching something on a TV I feel bad. I'm not saying I don't consume media, I'm saying I will never consume media on a device on which I can't produce media. It might be what the rest of the world wants, but for me its just wrong.
